RNG Crowned as League Of Legends MSI 2022 Champions

The League of Legends world championship series has always been one of the most competitive, fastest-paced eSports with a reputation for being unforgiving to newcomers. Yet this year's showpiece event, the MSI 2022 finals, saw underdog team Royal Never Give Up emerge victorious over odds-on favourite Cloud9. The victory was in no small part thanks to RNG support player Wei "We1less" Zhen's Lee Sin gameplay.

We1less' daring and aggressive style were on full display throughout the series. His flashy plays and intuitive decision-making drove RNG to victory, even when things looked bleakest. He earned himself a place in history as the first player to win a championship at worlds after entering the tournament as a wild card team.

The finals for the League of Legends MSI 2022 tournament proved to be a showcase of some of the best plays in the game's entire history. The Chinese team Royal Never Give Up (RNG) and their star mid laner, Wei Lee Sin, have been on the rise over the last few months, but they were still a relative unknown to most in the League community. Even RNG's own die-hard fans jokingly refer to them as "peking duck" because they are so difficult to predict. Their unconventional playstyle and unique champion pick often catch opponents by surprise. The team that RNG beat in the finals was also an enigma: Royal Never Losers (RNL), a squad from the Oceania region that had never even competed in a major international tournament before MSI 2022. RNL's players seemed to come out of nowhere and nobody knew anything about them—even their own fans didn't know their names! This was especially unusual for an Oceania team at an international event as big as MSI 2022.

It's no secret that the Chinese League of Legends Pro League is one of the most important leagues outside of Korea. It was the first region to adopt the 10-ban system, and it's consistently come up with creative ideas that have been implemented or adopted by other regions. The 2018 Mid-Season Invitational was won by RNG as a result of their 2-1 victory over Team Liquid in one of the most exciting grand finals in esports history, beating out strong contenders like SK Telecom T1 and G2 Esports. But what was RNG's secret weapon?

RNG's victory at League of Legends MSI 2022 makes them the undisputed kings of this tournament

RNG's victory at League of Legends MSI 2022 makes them the undisputed kings of this tournament. It's been a long time coming for the Chinese team; this is only their second major international win after MSI 2018, but it was very much worth the wait. RNG started off in Group A with a 2-0 loss to SK Telecom T1, but after that they didn't drop another game. They took down Fnatic 3-0 in the Quarterfinals, then bested Gen. G Esports 3-2 in the Semifinals, and finally defeated Flash Wolves 3-0 in the Grand Finals to take home their crown as champions of MSI 2022. This is a huge deal for RNG, who have now risen to be one of the most dominant teams in terms of international performances, alongside top-tier powerhouses like Afreeca Freecs and KT Rolster.

RNG's victory should come as no surprise—they've won four other tournaments this year already, and they have one more left before we move on to Worlds. The team has been dominant so far this year, and they don't look like they're going to stop any time soon. Congratulations to RNG!

The one thing that differentiates this tournament from last year's is the addition of a second spot for the European region, allowing them to have a representative at MSI alongside G2 Esports. The second place European team, Royal Never Give Up, made it all the way to the finals and faced off against G2 Esports, winning 3-2 and taking home the championship. It was an incredibly close match, with RNG coming out on top because of their ability to play around their opponents' mistakes and capitalize on opportunities. At this point, it's impossible to deny that RNG is clearly the best team in Europe—and perhaps even in all of League of Legends. They've won two major tournaments in a row now—the LEC Spring Split Playoffs and MSI 2022—and are firmly cemented as one of the best teams to ever play this game. The other team making their way from Europe was PSG.LGD, who finished third overall in LEC Spring Split Playoffs but came in second place during MSI 2022 after a strong showing in group stage and some impressive victories over Fnatic (twice) and Invictus Gaming (once).
