Why is Destiny 2 servers down?

Destiny 2 servers are down as players prepare to dive into the Season of the Drang, which goes live at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET today, April 19.

The servers will be offline for maintenance beginning at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET and ending at 9 a.m. PT/noon ET, according to Bungie's server status page on its website. It'll be back up soon afterwards, but you should expect some downtime if you're eager to play immediately after the maintenance is complete.

Bungie has not said what it's doing during this time, but it likely involves updating the game for Season of the Drang and preparing for tomorrow's reset for Trials of Osiris, Iron Banner, and its weekly Nightfall strike. The studio has also been working on fixing an issue with exotic quest rewards not dropping properly from rare spawns in the Dreaming City, so it might address that as well during this time frame, although it didn't give any indication that would happen in its server maintenance notice on Twitter or through the banner on its website.

Destiny 2's servers are going down for maintenance today, and Bungie says it's going to be a lengthy one.

Servers will go offline on Tuesday, April 19 at 8 a.m. Pacific (4 p.m. BST) and will not come back up until 5 p.m. Pacific (1 a.m. BST). That is nine hours of downtime for Destiny 2 players, although Bungie doesn't say whether or not this is related to the game's upcoming spring update or the start of Season 3 on May 8.

Bungie just announced the downtime on Twitter, so we don't know exactly what to expect as far as any potential patch notes are concerned. Whenever possible, we'll update this article with any new information that comes our way.

The outage is scheduled to begin at 5 PM UK time (9 AM Pacific), when Bungie will take the game's servers offline in order to launch the latest update, and it should be completed by 9 PM UK time (1 PM Pacific).

Bungie has yet to reveal what this update will contain, but we do know that a big hotfix is also planned for next week. So this maintenance period could be just a precursor to the real thing.

The Destiny 2 developers have been busy of late. In their weekly blog post last week, they announced that they would be making some changes to the way the game handles Masterworks. These are high-level versions of Legendary weapons that can be earned through Trials of The Nine or Raids, and which currently offer random rolls in relation to their perks. But in the future, Bungie will tie these perks directly to weapon type rather than leaving them randomized - as well as letting players re-roll Masterwork perks on every Masterwork weapon they earn.

Destiny 2 is down for four hours of server maintenance across all platforms, a week before the Warmind DLC expansion. Here's when you can expect the server to be back up.

Destiny 2 is having another one of its four-hour server maintenance periods today, with the game being taken offline at 8 a.m. PDT/11 a.m. EDT/3 p.m. GMT and not returning until 12 p.m./3 p.m./7 p.m., respectively, on April 19 (that's today).

The downtime is necessary to prepare Destiny 2 for the launch of its second expansion, Warmind, which goes live on May 8 and will add new story missions, a new raid lair, two new strikes, two new crucible maps, and an unspecified number of exotic weapons and armor pieces to Bungie's online shooter--among other things that haven't been announced yet but may well come out of the woodwork during Warmind's reveal Livestream later today at 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m EDT/5 p.m GMT (you can watch it through Twitch or Mixer).

Destiny 2 is down for maintenance, and players aren't happy about it. Bungie uses these maintenance periods to push hotfixes and other updates to their games. This time around, Bungie is going to push the Destiny 2 update 2.1.4 to the live game, which includes a variety of fixes for the Escalation Protocol activity on Mars, Masterwork cores, issues with Iron Banner and more.
